Cheftimony Episode 035 – Wine and Wifi

My guest today is Tania Tomaszewska, a banking lawyer with a great story. In recent years, Tania has traded legal practice for her own wine consultancy.

Today’s show is all about wine. Wine here, wine there, wine everywhere – even over wifi! But before we get to a tasty rosé and today’s interview, I talk a little bit about Some Resources, a recent snack-sized episode of Cheftimony where I highlighted resources that might help you to find fresh, local food during these unprecedented time and resources that could help us all to help the restaurants we love. Today, I add two more resources for you to consider, OneTable and SaveHospitality. Have a look at what these restaurant organizations are doing to try to preserve the hospitality community we love.

My guest today is Tania Tomaszewska, a banking lawyer with a great story. In recent years, Tania has traded legal practice for her own wine consultancy. Tania and I start out the show talking about Re-Think Pink, a rosé from Joie Farm that each of us sipped while we chatted through our interview, virtually of course to maintain proper social distancing. After squaring away our thoughts on that wine and what foods might pair well with it, Tania and I move on to discuss her years in law – both in Vancouver and in Australia – and her transition to her own wine-focused business, TT Wine Explorer.

Tania shares some great thoughts on what inspires people to make changes, to take a new direction. We tackle the notion of “identity” and how being a lawyer offers a pretty cushy perch from which to answer the often-asked question “What do you do?” These days, having left banking law behind, Tania does a lot. She creates wine journeys, in many different ways, for her clients, including clients who don’t drink wine but who love to learn about it. Tania dives into the geography of wine and the stories it inspires. And as you’ll hear toward the end of our talk, Tania is exploring ideas for virtual tastings, the possibility of connecting over wine online, as she and I did for our interview.

I love that Tania, like other wine experts I know, absolutely endorses the “drink what you enjoy” philosophy. In fact, Tania will tell you today never to apologize for wines you like or wines you don’t like. The wine you’re drinking is your experience, and you should enjoy it on your terms. And for those, like me, who like wine but want to learn more about its layers and stories, Tania shares some tips on how to dip your toe into the topic.

So pour a glass of your favourite wine (or other beverage), and join Tania and me for a virtual wine journey!
